Cutback (liquid) road petroleum bitumen produced to Turkmen state standard TDS 788-2016 in five viscosity grades. Liquid bitumen is laid without heating to hot-mix paving temperature, which makes it the binder of choice for priming, cold and warm mixes, surface dressing and base stabilisation. The MG series is specified on evaporated-flux content and the softening point of the residue; the MGO series carries the higher flash points, min 120 °C and 160 °C.

Specification

  • Grades: MG 40/70, MG 70/130, MG 130/200, MGO 40/70, MGO 70/130
  • Standard: TDS 788-2016, liquid road petroleum bitumen
  • Conditional viscosity at 60 °C, 5 mm orifice: 40–200 s depending on grade
  • Flash point, open cup: min 100–160 °C depending on grade
  • Adhesion to marble or sand: passes reference sample No. 2, all grades
  • Loading: heated rail tank cars, road tankers or 200 l drums

Choosing a grade

Viscosity rises with the grade number. The 40/70 grades are the most fluid and are used for priming and dust control; 70/130 suits cold and warm mixes and surface dressing; 130/200 is the stiffest of the range and is used where a slower-setting, higher-residue binder is wanted. Where a hot-mix paving binder is required, the viscous BND grades apply instead.

Applications

Priming of granular bases, cold and warm asphalt mixes, surface dressing and chip seals, road base and shoulder stabilisation, and dust suppression on unsealed roads.
