Choosing a weight

100 to 125 g/m² is the light end — printing base, linings and light bed linen. 132 to 145 g/m² is the working range and where most of the volume sits, including a 140 g/m² build the mills quote as a special high-quality construction. 153 g/m² is the heaviest, on open-end yarn, for covers and heavier making-up.

Ring, ring compact and open-end

All three appear at Nm 34/1. Ring-compact yarn has fewer protruding fibres, so it gives the cleanest face and is what the 120, 132 and 145 g/m² loom-state builds are spun from. Plain ring carries the 125 g/m² build. Open-end is coarser and cheaper, used on the 153 g/m² greige and on some of the dyed builds.

A note on the name

The mills sell dyed and printed cretonne under the name byaz as well — the exchange listings read “Kreton, 100% cotton (byaz), dyed and printed”. Loom-state byaz in the fixed 90 cm width is a different, narrower cloth and is listed separately under grey calico and byaz.

Applications

Bed linen sets and duvet covers, printing and dyeing base cloth, linings and backing, curtains and light furnishing, and general making-up. Cretonne is the workhorse plain weave of the Turkmen mills and the most consistently offered greige cloth after flannel.

Related

Every loom-state cloth the Turkmen mills weave is listed under grey fabric, each on one page with all of its weights. The ranges they dye, print and finish are collected under dyed cotton fabric.
